The Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound School is actively seeking a Collaborative, Organized, Hard-Working Self-Starter to join our program leadership team in the role of Logistic Manager. This position reports to the Program & Safety Director and supports Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound School’s (CBOBS) mission and programming capabilities, directly overseeing all aspects of program and basecamp logistics.
The Logistics Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the logistical department, including basecamp, in-field, and facilities program support, as well as the management and supervision of warehouse, gear/equipment, basecamp/course supplies, vehicles/transportation, food, support schedules, and minor facilities maintenance. Support a collaborative work environment in partnership with the Program Team, Program & Safety Director, and Operations Director the fosters growth and development of CBOBS’ mission and programming.
- Responsible for creating and maintaining exceptional warehouse and food room organization, operation, and cleanliness.
- Oversee regular inventory of assigned areas, including annual, seasonal, and post-season.
- Oversee equipment inventory and supervise issue and de-issue of gear, food, and consumables, including cleaning and medical supplies.
- Manage all repairs and maintenance of field equipment.
- Oversee logistical support to ensure that courses remain true to Outward Bound’s mission, purpose, and core values.
- Work cooperatively with Program Team and directly with Expedition Program Manager to ensure that the logistical needs of courses and basecamp facilities are met, including supply run and crew transportation.
- Work with Expedition Program Manager to manage student needs, dietary needs and allergies, and appropriate menu design.
- Ensure quantity and quality of field equipment is sufficient to meet the needs of current and projected courses.
- Support the Chief Operations Officer in maintaining the appearance and maintenance of all facilities, primarily during off-season low program activity months, and as able during high season.
- Perform maintenance to all facilities, as experience allows, and coordinate with professional contractors as needed.
- Follow and uphold all OBUSA, CBOBS, national, state, and local logistics policies and procedures.
- Ensure support staff compliance with the National Safety Policies and Procedures and all Charter Operating Policies and Procedures.
- With consultation from the Program & Safety Director, create appropriate risk management plans for any new logistics duties or non-routine logistics operations.
- Establish and maintain a positive working environment within warehouse/food room and basecamp community, including big picture planning and vision for logistics areas and staff.
- Enforce safety policies, procedures, and practices for the base's warehouse, food room, and other logistics workspaces and duties that meet OSHA workplace health and safety guidelines and State Health Department standards.
- Monitor and address safety issues associated with logistics staff’s physical workspaces, including the base’s warehouse, food room, and vehicle lot.
- Manage the basecamp vehicle fleet, ensuring vehicle maintenance, logs, inspections, repairs, and registrations are completed as required.
- Advise on logistics training systems and manuals and support with manual updates and maintenance.
- Work with the program team and train field staff on logistics operations, including gear usage, food packing, vehicle training (driving and trailer), and technical
- Mentor, coach, and schedule all logistics support staff ensuring coverage for course support needs, including evening and weekends as needed.
- Help facilitate weekly meetings with the Program Team.
- In coordination with the Program & Safety Director, hire, train, and manage full and part-time/seasonal logistics staff.
- Provide ongoing training and professional development opportunities for support staff, creating space to both give and receive timely, effective oral and written feedback.
- Serve as the point of contact for the Staff House Manager.
- Work with Program & Safety Director to assure all necessary purchases are made before and during each season; support the acquisition of operational and capital purchases.
- Manage logistics budget line and report expenses, and review receipts regularly.
- Establish and maintain relationships with food vendors, vehicles suppliers, equipment vendors, price shopping as applicable.
- Oversee all aspects of CBOBS’ vehicle fleet ensuring vehicle maintenance, logs, inspections, repairs, and registrations are completed as required.
- Maintain documentation of the role to act as a resource for successors of the position.
- Coordinate and collaborate with all CBOBS departments to ensure a cooperative and supportive system.

- Competency in driving trailers up to 12ft in length and ability to teach and evaluate others.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Salesforce, and Google apps.
- Experience designing and implementing comprehensive plans with multiple moving parts.
- Ability to work independently and conduct self-directed research.
- Willing and eager to solve problems creatively.
- Perform with grace when under pressure, meet deadlines, and juggle competing priorities.
Education and Work Experience:
- 4-6 years of experience and proficiency in inventory control, organizational systems, gear repair and maintenance (camping, backpacking, small craft), and food safety and storage. Outward Bound experience preferred.
- 1-3 years of supervisory experience.
- Field-based adventure-programming experience, or instructor certifications in canoeing, sea kayaking, Challenge Course, Rock Climbing, etc. preferred.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Must be 21 years or older and able to pass multiple background checks including State and Federal Criminal, Child Protective Services, and Motor Vehicle Record check
- Valid Driver’s License, with 5-years or more of driving experience and willingness to drive large and all-terrain vehicles.
- Basic First aid required; Wilderness First Responder Training, CPR, AED, Epinephrine training preferred.
- Knowledge Outward Bound Charter Operating Policies and Procedures, philosophy, history, and CBOBS programming preferred.
Some physical requirements of a Logistics Manager position could be endurance, including walking, hiking, standing, bending, stooping, and stretching. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to drive and operate equipment and supervises others in such activities. Willingness to work in an outdoor setting regardless of weather and work irregular hours in the facility and environment available. Operate daily exposure to the sun and heat and exposure to various animals, plants, and environmental conditions.
- Ability to communicate and work and provide necessary instruction to participants and staff from various age groups and backgrounds.
- Ability to observe staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate management techniques.
- Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
- Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist participants and staff in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury).
- Ability to perform job responsibilities during daylight and nighttime hours.
- Able to lift and transport 30-50 lbs. several times a day.
- Be sufficiently fit to assist with base or in-field program support, including belaying, rock set-up, and hiking with a loaded pack.
- Ability to drive long periods up to 6 hours roundtrip.
Compensation & Benefits
- The salary range for this position is $36,800-$55,200. Pay will be commensurate with experience.
