Summary

The Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound School (CBOBS) is part of an international education movement dedicated to the idea that people are capable of far more than they know. Our leadership programs and character curriculum empower individuals in local schools, community organizations, and the police department to effect positive change in the Chesapeake Bay region.

The CBOBS Logistics Coordinator helps ensure quality program delivery. Primary responsibilities include monitoring the use of program equipment (backpacks, boats, technical clothing, etc.), sufficiently stocking the ‘food-room’ per program needs, transporting students and staff to distant course-areas (up to three hours one-way from Baltimore), inspecting the vehicle fleet for good repair and maintaining facilities/equipment as necessary.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure thorough completion of all program logistics prior to student arrival
  • Assist Head Logistics Coordinator (HLC) to maintain the food and equipment inventory
  • Repair equipment as necessary (patching, sewing, replacing zippers, caulking/sealing and upgrading worn components of canoes and sea kayaks)
  • Collaborate with the Program Team (PT) to identify and plan for all course support needs
  • Collaborate with the PT to resolve any issues with programs in the field and coordinate student and staff evacuations as necessary
  • Drive large passenger vans, often with trailers, in variable driving conditions
  • Support HLC in maintaining all campus facilities
  • Support HLC in delivering Driver, Logistics, and Workplace Health & Safety Training.
  • Support HLC in supervising staff working in the logistics department.
  • Maintain professional relationships with outside agencies, vendors, and residents
  • Desire to be a leadership figure and role model in the CBOBS community

Knowledge and Skills

  • Detail-oriented with good organizational skills
  • History of excellent driving and trailering ability
  • Knowledge of vehicle maintenance a plus
  • Proficiency in basic carpentry a plus
  • Proficiency with a sewing machine a plus
  • History of positive working relationships with peers and supervisors
  • Able to balance the support needs of more than one expedition at a time
  • Ability to solve problems effectively and creatively
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Education and Work Experience

  • At least two years of experience in outdoor education or any field that requires driving, using tools, being on a team, handling food, or working outside.
  • Certified as a Wilderness First Responder a plus
  • Ability to act in the role of a lead instructor a plus

Physical Requirements

  • On feet most days – sometimes up to 16+ hours/day when working in the field (coordinating evacuations, resupplying crews with more food and equipment, etc.)
  • Ability to carry up to 60 pounds

Additional Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Valid Class B driver’s license with 5 years driving experience
  • Must pass federal, state and motor vehicle record checks

Compensation

  • $1,800 to $2,200 per month. Commensurate with experience. Room and basic board provided. Higher end compensation for qualified instructors who can support Expedition Course delivery up to 25% of time in the role.

Schedule

  • This is a 6-month position that starts on or about June 1st and runs through the first week of November. Work schedule is atypical. The Logistics Coordinator will at times be required to work early-morning and evening hours beyond the standard work day.
